The word meritage was coined in California to describe a Bordeaux-style wine blended from great quality ingredients. Chef Jan Kelly grew up in a culinary family in Southern California. In addition to her family's restaurant, Jan gained experience in a number of Northern California restaurants. In 1995, Jan and her husband moved to Milwaukee. Here she worked at several restaurants where her pioneering involvement with locally sourced ingredients evolved. Jan fell in love with the Washington Heights neighborhood and her desire to open a casual, fine-dining restaurant with an emphasis on the freshest local ingredients culminated with the August 2007 opening of Meritage: A Contemporary Blend of Food and Wine. Here her vision of the perfect meritage "blend" is complete: great food, great wine and great customers.
